Bio: Dr Semra Bakkaloglu has been a Research Associate in the Chemical Engineering Department at Imperial College London since October 2020, with over 10 years of combined experience in academia, industry, and consultancy.

Dr Bakkaloglu’s research expertise lies at the intersection of environmental and chemical engineering. She specialises in the quantification, characterisation, and mitigation of methane emissions from biogas and biomethane supply chains. Her work also extends to negative emission technologies, where she explores innovative solutions to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA), energy systems modelling.  Her research has led to impactful publications in high-ranking journals and contributed to policy frameworks and industrial practices aimed at achieving net-zero goals.

Dr Bakkaloglu received dual BSc degrees in Environmental Engineering (2011) and Chemical Engineering (2012) from the prestigious Middle East Technical University (METU) in Türkiye. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, which enabled her to pursue an MSc in Environmental Engineering and Earth Science at Clemson University, USA, graduating in 2014. She began her professional career at the Turkish Petroleum Refinery Corporation (Tüpras), where she worked for three years as a process engineer, gaining hands-on experience in refinery operations, process optimisation, and emissions management. She later earned her PhD in 2021 as an EU Horizon 2020 Marie Curie Early-Stage Researcher at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK.
