Vale Green Energy has graciously offered to host a site visit of their Springhill Nurseries Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Plant – the first gas-to-grid plant injecting into the Wales and West Network. This is a side-event of the World Biogas Expo, and will take place Tuesday morning, 9th July.

Expo organisers will pick-up guests in a coach at the NEC Birmingham complex at 9:00. The drive is about an hour. At the site, guests will take guided tours around the facilities, learning about the crop treatment, gas-to-grid, CO2 capture and CHP operations. Look through the sight glasses installed around the tanks to see firsthand what happens inside the digesters! On your visit, you’ll observe biogas technology in-situ including the recently installed and commissioned injection hub and biomethane re-fuelling station. In addition to meeting the site managers, you will also have an opportunity to network face-to-face with the other guests on the trip. The coach will bring guests back to the NEC Birmingham complex by 13:00 so you can then carry on there with your lunch appointments and meetings for the rest of the day.

Background

Springhill AD Plant was commissioned in August 2013 and was the first gas-to-grid plant injecting into the Wales and West Network.

The treatment facilities take up to 70 tonnes per day of agriculture feedstock. The plant size is 1.5mw consisting of a 1x500kw CHP engine and Pentair gas-to-grid technology, exporting up to 9000m³/day of methane into the national grid. This is Pentair’s first upgrading plant in the UK to produce biomethane. The CHP engine is based on the site, which supplies power and heat for the daily operations of the plant as well as producing heat for neighbouring glasshouse production of fruits and vegetables.

The plant has 2 digester tanks with the combined capacity of 4200m³. The site has a secondary digester – which extends retention time and produces biogas – and a combination bag for both liquid and gas storage. Moreover, the site includes an eco bag with a capacity of 5000m³ to hold centrate used as fertiliser spread on fields.
